Over the past two weeks the MLive Media Group has been doing 15-minute virtual meetings with businesses around Michigan to help answer questions and see how we can help them during a time of need. In the course of those meetings we have discovered three types of businesses:
These are businesses have had their office structure disrupted by a shelter in place order but are continuing to get business done.
Nervous and need to sell
These are businesses that have been heavily disrupted by both the pandemic and the shelter in place who need solutions to get business done.
Closed but not invisible
These are businesses who have had to close because of the order who do not want to disappear from the digital landscape. This group is looking to pivot to online ordering or looking to provide value to their consumer even if they cannot recoup the cost of that content.
What these three types of businesses have in common is a need to reach their customers where they are right now. There are a few ways you can do that, beginning with looking at what you are running to see if those ads or that content is tone-deaf to the moment at hand. Audit any marketing automation you are running to see if that too doesn’t feel right and adjust it accordingly. If you are creating content right now for your customer – how can your brand help?

It comes as no surprise that humans are spending the most time in history on the internet looking for answers, solace during the turbulence, or for a distraction. How does your brand fit in that formula and what can you create to meet them where they are? As a brand we have a story to tell and while that story made have to be altered to match the voice of the current situation – it is still a story worth telling.
Take a moment with your team to think about what your customer is doing right now. What they might need help with today and how can you provide a solution to their problems? If you are creating content around those questions, you will see customers be receptive to those messages and reward your brand with loyalty and affinity when we get back to our “new normal.”
