Here’s a number that should make every community bank marketer sit up straight: 76% of American consumers view local banks favorably. For local credit unions, that number is 77%, which is the highest favorability rating of any institution type in the country. Not national banks. Not fintechs. Not the big digital-only challengers spending millions on Super Bowl spots.
You.
So why are so many community financial institutions still fighting for awareness like they’re the underdog?
Preference Is Not the Same as Choice
This is the central tension we found when surveying 1,031 American financial consumers for our 2026 American Financial Consumer study. Consumer preference for local institutions is overwhelming. But preference doesn’t automatically translate into account openings. The financial institution that wins a new customer is almost always the one that was already in the consumer’s mental shortlist before the trigger moment — the new car, the home purchase, the job change — arrived.
In other words: the race is mostly won or lost before the consumer ever starts shopping.
The Awareness Gap
Thirty-five percent of consumers first learned about their primary financial institution through a family member. Another 27% through word of mouth. Online search accounts for 31% of first impressions. Social media for 22%.
These numbers reveal something important. Your existing customers are your best marketing channel — and most institutions have done almost nothing to systematize that. No formal referral programs. No community content strategy. No consistent search presence. And increasingly, no visibility in the AI-powered search tools that a growing percentage of consumers use to research financial products.
The 2026 Urgency
Consumer research behavior is shifting faster than most marketing budgets. When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google’s AI Overview ‘who is the best local bank in [city]’ — what answer do they get? For most community institutions, the honest answer is: we don’t know. And that’s the problem.
The institutions that will win the next decade of consumer relationships are the ones building awareness right now — in search, in social, in AI-generated answers, and in the community conversations that precede every trigger moment.
Your favorability score is your starting line. Now you need to run the race.
